Software Reviews Part 4

Today I'll be reviewing VSts that specialize in delivering poor quality, old-school drum sounds.

8bit Drums - Free (7.5/10)
This one is somewhat lesser known, but actually delivers when it comes to creating customizable 8bit drum sounds.

Successes
-Actually generates its own sounds
-Sounds like 8bit drums

Failures
-Excessively large GUI

SKdrummer - Free (4/10)
First of all, just let me say that if you grew up with a shitty little keyboard from the 80's, this VST will make you giggle like a little girl. If you didn't, this will just sound like tinny, lo-fi drum samples.

Successes
-Sounds like the drums from an SK-1
-+1 for nostalgia factor.
-Pitch and volume sliders

Failures
-Might as well just download a few samples if this doesn't bring back memories.

Toad - Free (5/10)
This one has sounds that more of you will recognize, since it's based off sounds from the NES.

Successes
-Sounds like an NES.
-Some extra knobs.

Failures
-Little more than a glorified sample pack.

  5. In my mind, at least for drums, if you are going for a retro-feel, why not just use samples? These VST items seem bulky for that rhythmic area.

  7. Yeah, a lot of percussion VSTs don't do much more than samples would anyway. I appreciate ones that allow you to customize and generate new sounds though.

  9. I am so on the look for the SK drummer now. Actually this is a nice spread. I just got a new computer and would like to get back in to the music, so I shall be following this blog more than ever and probably emailing you mercilessly. Happy Halloween!
